Amul to set up world's largest curd manufacturing facility in Kolkata with Rs 600 cr investment

Kolkata: In a significant boost to India's dairy industry, Amul has announced plans to establish the world’s largest curd (dahi) manufacturing facility in Kolkata, media reports said.

The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which owns the Amul brand, confirmed the Rs 600 crore investment during the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2025.

“We will be setting up an integrated dairy plant in Kolkata, West Bengal. The new facility will have the world's largest curd manufacturing plant with a capacity of 10 lakh kg per day,” MD of GCMMF Jayen Mehta was quoted as saying by PTI.

The plant, located at Sankrail Food Park in Howrah near Kolkata, will also feature a milk processing capacity of 1.5 million litres per day.

It is being developed in two phases by Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd, Anand.

Kolkata and its neighbouring regions have a high demand for curd, especially for traditional varieties like ‘tok doi’ (sour curd) and ‘mishti doi’ (sweet curd).

The new facility aims to cater to this growing market while strengthening Amul’s presence in West Bengal.

Currently, Amul is the largest fresh milk brand in the state, selling over one million litres of milk daily.

The company has also developed an extensive milk procurement network across 14 districts, connecting over 1.2 lakh women milk producers.

The establishment of this facility aligns with the White Revolution 2.0 initiative led by the Ministry of Cooperation, aimed at bolstering India’s dairy sector.

Amul, which reported a turnover of Rs 59,445 crore in 2023-24 with 8% growth, anticipates double-digit revenue growth this year.

The cooperative processes 31 million litres of milk daily and has an annual milk processing capacity of 50 million litres.

On the global stage, GCMMF ranks eighth among the world's top 20 dairy companies in terms of milk processing, as per the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN).

Amul also exports dairy products to nearly 50 countries and recently expanded into the US market with four fresh milk variants targeting the Indian and Asian diaspora.
