Chennai/IBNS: Apple has started assembling iPhone 12 in Tamil Nadu for its local customers, the company said, as it speeds up manufacturing in the world's second largest market.

Apple will assemble the iPhone 12 at the Indian unit of Apple's Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn in Tamil Nadu, said a Reuters report.

The Cupertino, California-headquartered Apple has been shifting some areas of production from China to other markets amid a trade war between China and the USA.

Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron, all Taiwanese suppliers, have together pledged roughly $900 million over the course of five years to make iPhones in India, leveraging New Delhi's $6.7 billion plan to boost smartphone exports, the Reuters report stated.

Apple began manufacturing iPhone in India in 2017 through Taiwanese supplier, Wistron.

As news of iPhone 12 production surfaced, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted, "Nice to see our efforts to make India a big hub of mobile and components manufacturing is attracting global attention. This will create jobs in large numbers."

The smartphone manufacturer is also planning to bring its iPad tablet production to India, Reuters report added.
