Mumbai, Jun 6 (IBNS): IT veteran Azim Premji will retire as the executive chairman of the Wipro Limited with effect from July 30.

He will, however, continue on the board as non-executive director and founder chairman, Wipro said in a statement on Thursday.

The post will be taken over by his son Rishad Premji.

"Azim Premji, one of the pioneers of the Indian technology industry and founder of Wipro Limited, will retire as executive chairman upon the completion of his current term on July 30, 2019, after having led the company for 53 years," Wipro said in a statement.

"However, he will continue to serve on the board as non-executive director and founder chairman," said the company.

Abidali Z Neemuchwala, the chief executive and executive director, will take charge as the managing director of the company.

He will also continue as the chief executive officer of Wipro.
