BRICS Cities Conclave 2016 begins in Mumbai

Mumbai Apr 14 (IBNS): The BRICS Friendship Cities Conclave 2016 comprising representations from Brazil, Russia, India, China & South Africa was inaugurated on Thursday in Mumbai.

Union Urban development Minister Venkaiah Naidu stressed on the importance of positive correlation between urbanization and development inspite of challenges of Urbanization.

He termed the process of urbanization as inevitable and expressed confidence that the conclave will be more insightful based on the experiences shared by the BRICS nations.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis announced the state government plans to create an urban agglomeration NAINA that will host 22 smart cities.

The first integrated development plan for this was ready and the second was in process of making.

The event hosted by Mumbai First, a think tank with the active support from the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra, will witness presence of more than 75 delegates from the BRICS countries during the two day event.  The delegates include Governors, City Leaders, Urban Planners, Ministers and experts from the BRICS nations.

After India took the presidency of the BRICS countries from February 2016 for one full year, this is the first major activity by India that provides a platform for the BRICS nations to exchange knowledge and information on urban development.

On the occasion, Naidu also released a collection of Essays titled as “The Making of Vibrant BRICS Cities” and authored by more than 25 eminent writers.

The book depicts the challenges and the opportunities that are before cities from the BRICS nations in becoming a truly vibrant urban city.
