Indian govt hikes excise duty on petrol, diesel

| @indiablooms | Apr 07, 2025, at 04:54 pm

The Indian government has hiked the excise duty on petrol and diesel prices by Rs. 2 per litre.

The duty hike has been announced at a time when global crude oil prices remained volatile.

The volatility could be seen amid fears over the trade war sparked off by reciprocal tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump.

The Ministry of Finance said the new change will come into effect on April 8.

The  Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas clarified that the change in the exercise price will not affect the consumers.

"PSU Oil Marketing Companies have informed that there will be no increase in retail prices of #Petrol and #Diesel, subsequent to the increase effected in Excise Duty Rates today," Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India, posted on X.

As of April 7, the petrol price in Delhi costs Rs 94.77 per litre in New Delhi.

Diesel price in the national capital stood at Rs 87.67 per litre.
