Indian Market: Sensex drops 241.79 pts

The equity market got a break on Monday, as the BSE Sensex ended negative at 67,596.84, dropped 241.79 pts, snapping 11 sessions rally amid weak global cues.

The Nifty slipped 59.05 pts at 20,133.30.

The Sensex opening on a weak note at 67,665.58, down 173 pts. It remained negative throughout the session. During the day it was plummeted 306 pts at 67,532.83, days low, before closing.at 67,596.84, sliding 241.79 pts from its previous close.

In stocks, Telecommunication was a major loser, fell 1.86 pc followed by Realty by 1.27 pc, Commodities by 0.96 pc and Technology by 0.92 pc.

In scrips, HDFC Bank a major losers eased by 1.98 pc to Rs 1629.05, Bharti Airtel by 1.71 pc to Rs 920.40, Infosys by 1.40 pc to Rs 1491.10 and Ultracemco by 1.36 pc to Rs 8609.10.

The gainers were Powergrid by 3.01 pc to Rs 200.05, Titan by 2.73 pc to Rs 3339.20, M& M by 2.65 pc to Rs 1643.25, NTPC by 2.07 pc to Rs 241.25 and Bajaj Finserv by 1.35 pc to Rs 1559.15.

The Mid Cap declined by 0.27 pc and Small Cap by 0.60 pc.

In 30 scrips 15 advanced while 15 declined.

World shares fell, however, the dollar was firmed today as growth concerns tested investors' mettle ahead of a week brimming with central bank meetings in countries including Sweden, Switzerland, Britain, the United States and Japan.

There will be no trading on Tuesday on BSE and NSE on account of 'Ganesh Chaturthi ', festival, broker informed.
