PM Modi, Sheikh Hasina to launch cross-border fuel pipeline on March 18: Report
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina will launch the first-ever India-Bangladesh cross-border oil pipeline on March 18 through video conferencing, Bangladesh's Foreign Minister A K Momen said on Friday, media reported.
The 130 km long Indo-Bangla Friendship Pipeline (IBFPL) pipeline will carry high-speed diesel from Numaligarh Refinery Limited’s (NRL) marketing terminal in West Bengal’s Siliguri to Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation's (BPC) oil depot in Parbatipur city in Dinajpur District of the neighbouring country, according to a Business Standard report.
Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) is headquartered at Numaligarh in Golaghat district of Assam.
The custody transfer point for the fuel will be at Banglabandha International border point on the outskirts of Siliguri.
The IBFPL is among various agreements between two countries aimed at enabling Bangladesh to access greater volumes of energy and meet its increasing domestic energy requirements.
The project was built at a total cost of Rs 377.08 crore, with funding of Rs 285.24 crore provided by India as a grant in aid and Rs 91.84 crore provided by NRL.
The pipeline covers a distance of 5 km within Indian borders, with the remainder of the pipeline extending through Bangladesh.
The pipeline has the potential to transport up to one million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA).
