New Delhi: In a major crackdown against wrongdoings, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has compulsorily retired 22 tax officials over corruptions charges, media reports said.

The 22 officers used to belong to the rank of Superintendent/AO.

A CBIC statement has been quoted by Times Now, "The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has compulsorily retired yet another 22 senior officers of the rank of Superintendent/Administrative Officer under Fundamental Rule 56 (J)... due to corruption and other charges and CBI traps.” A CBIC official said, "We have recently taken the bold step of compulsorily retiring a significant number of tax officials, and we will not tolerate this type of behaviour."

Earlier, the Finance Ministry had sacked 27 senior IRS officers including 12 from the income tax department.
