UPI just hit a massive milestone! Over 55 crore users onboarded by June 2026

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the provisions of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, had 55.49 crore users onboarded on its platform as of June 2026, the government informed Parliament on Monday.

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, said the figure reflects the continued expansion of India's flagship digital payments platform.

He also highlighted the role of NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NPCI incorporated in April 2020, which is tasked with expanding NPCI's payment solutions—including UPI and the RuPay card scheme—to international markets.

According to the minister, NIPL works with foreign governments and institutions to enable seamless cross-border digital payments for Indian tourists and the Indian diaspora. It also supports partner countries in developing digital payment infrastructure, including UPI-like real-time payment systems and RuPay-like domestic card schemes.

Chaudhary said the Government, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and NPCI have introduced a series of measures over the years to enhance the security and transparency of UPI-based transactions.

These include risk-based transaction limits to reduce fraudulent transactions, safeguards against unauthorised mobile number changes and misuse of SMS-based authentication, as well as strengthened security requirements for UPI-enabled applications.

He added that NPCI has introduced the Comprehensive UPI Information Security Framework (CUISF) 2025 and the Mobile Application Security Framework, which mandate advanced security controls to further strengthen the safety and resilience of the UPI ecosystem.

The minister also noted that UPI has been integrated with the payment systems of several countries, enabling Person-to-Person (P2P) remittances and Person-to-Merchant (P2M) transactions, thereby expanding the global reach of India's digital payments ecosystem.
