Washington/IBNS: A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit US' New York and New Jersey on Friday, the United States Geological Survey said.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre estimated the magnitude at 5.5.

A UN Security Council meeting was briefly interrupted as the tremor rattled the UN headquarters, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

The New York  Fire Department said there were no initial reports of damage.

“A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit west of Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York. My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul tweeted.

A ground stop was ordered at JFK, Newark, and Baltimore airports.
