Dhaka: Bangladesh is combating a serious wave of COVID-19 pandemic as 230 new deaths due to the infection were reported in the past 24 hours, media reports said on Sunday.

The death toll due to the virus now stands at 16,419.

The COVID-19 caseload surged to 1,021,189 after 11,874 people tested positive for the disease until 8 am Sunday, according to the latest government data, reports bdnews24.

Khulna has emerged as the recent hotspot of the COVID-19 infection in the country.

The region alone registered 66 deaths due to the virus.

Dhaka was a close second with 56 deaths, followed by Chattogram with 39, Rajshahi with 26, and Rangpur with 22, reports the news portal.

Dhaka logged the highest daily cases among the eight divisions with 4,961. Khulna saw 1,591, Chattogram 1,553, and Rajshahi 1,153, reports bdnews24.

The recent surge in cases has forced the Bangladeshi government to impose the harshest lockdown for the past several days.
