"Central government is setting up new AIIMS"

| | Nov 29, 2014, at 04:35 am
New Delhi, Nov 28 (IBNS) Union Health Minister J P Nadda on Friday said the Central government is setting up new AIIMS in a phased manner in different States under Pradhan MantriSwasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) which aims at correcting the imbalances in availability of affordable or reliable tertiary level health care and to augment facilities for quality medical education in the underserved areas.

"Six new AIIMS have been set up. These are AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMSPatna, AIIMS Raipur and AIIMS Rishikesh. In each of these new AIIMS, three batches of MBBS students and two batches of B.Sc. (Nursing) students are receiving education. Hospitals in each of these AIIMS are functional to a limited extent. Construction work of residential complex of AIIMS, Rae Bareli is in progress," Nadda said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has requested the Chief Ministers of different States to identify three or four locations for setting up of new AIIMS.

Approximately 200 acres of land at a location is required for establishment of one AIIMS-type Super Specialty Hospital-cum-Teaching Institution. The location should have road connectivity, availability of water and electricity.

"The State Government has to undertake to provide free of cost land and other required infrastructure such as suitable road connection, sufficient water supply, electricity connection of required load and regulatory/statutory clearances for the purpose. A check-list for each of the suggested locations by State Government has also been circulated among the States," he said.

Governments of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have identified locations for proposed AIIMS, he said.

The Minister said: "Under PMSSY, existing Government Medical Colleges/Institutions are upgraded to super specialty levels. So far, 58 Government Medical Colleges/Institutions under three phases of PMSSY upgradation have been covered. In his Budget Speech, the Finance Minister has announced taking up of 12 more Government Medical Colleges/Institutions forupgradation. Details are given below:"
