Covid vaccine recipients don't get to choose between two options for now: Centre
New Delhi/IBNS: The Indian government on Tuesday said that no recipient of Covid-19 vaccine gets to choose from the two candidates available in the country for emergency use.
One being asked by a question at the media briefing on Tuesday, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said: "At many places of the world, more than one Covid-19 vaccines are being administered, however, in no country people get to choose the vaccine shots."
The Indian government has done the procurement agreement with Serum Institute of India (SII) for 110 lakh doses of Covishield vaccine and with Bharat Biotech for 55 lakh doses of the indigenous candidate Covaxin.
Bhushan informed that the Centre is having close collaboration with States/UTs for vaccine roll-out.
"All preparations are on track for vaccine roll-out from 16th January, 2021," said he.
"As said earlier, there will be sequential roll-out of COVID19 vaccination. Health care workers will be on the top priority, followed by frontline workers and prioritized age groups. Cost of health care workers and frontline workers will be borne by central government," Bhushan added.
Meanwhile, India's daily new Covid-19 cases tally touched a new low on Monday.
The country added 12,584 daily new cases to the national tally in the last 24 hours after nearly seven months.
