Five more COVID-19 cases confirmed in Malawi

Lilongwe/Xinhua/UNI: Malawi on Wednesday reported five new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the country's total to 23.

All five new cases and the one confirmed on Tuesday were identified in two of the suburbs of the capital city, Lilongwe, and two of them recently traveled to Tanzania and India, respectively, said Principal Secretary for Health Dan Namalika.

He described the five cases as of great concern since they have been traced from one location where the index patient lives to another high-density area across the city where the other four have been identified and confirmed positive for the virus.

"This means we need to broaden our tracking to trace more contacts in both locations, including the other location where the sixth case traced to India was identified," Namalika told a briefing in the commercial city of Blantyre.

Malawi has registered two deaths and three recoveries from the 23 confirmed cases; 18 cases are actively monitored.
