New Delhi/IBNS: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Saturday announced to partner with the Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) to develop a fully indigenous vaccine for Covid-19 using the virus strain isolated at ICMR's National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune, reports said.

According to ICMR, the virus strain has been successfully transferred from its NIV facility to BBIL and work on vaccine development has been initiated between the two partners.

Officials at ICMR said that ICMR-NIV will provide continuous support to BBIL for vaccine development, and ICMR and BBIL will seek fast-track approvals to expedite vaccine development, subsequent animal studies and clinical evaluation of the candidate vaccine.

The Covid-19 tally in India is nearing 60,000 with deaths clocking towards 2,000 as 36 states and union territories are set to enter into the last week of the lockdown announced by the government.

As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 59,662 people including 17,847 cured and 1,981 deceased have been infected with the contagion.
