New Delhi: India maintained its constant decline in COVID-19 caseload as the country added 16,375 new cases in the past 24 hours, as per data released by the Ministry of Health.

During the same period, the country also witnessed the deaths of 201 people due to the highly infectious virus, taking the total death toll to 149850.

There are 231036 active cases in the country at present.

So far, 9975958 people have been discharged from hospital.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday imposed a new lockdown in England and Scotland in view of the surge in the number of COVID cases.

Everyone in England must stay at home except for permitted reasons during a new coronavirus lockdown which is likely expected to last until mid-February, according to Downing Street, a BBC report said.

The new rules said that all schools and colleges will by and large remained closed to most pupils and will switch to remote learning from Tuesday.

Johnson warned that the coming weeks would be the "hardest yet" amid the surge in the number of cases and patient numbers.
