India fights corona: COVID-19 case count on marginal decline in Meghalaya

Shillong/UNI: Meghalaya, which is one of the most COVID-19 affected states in the North East, has been registering a marginal decline in the daily case count, which is largely attributable to the strict implementation of the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

On Tuesday, five Coronavirus-related deaths increased the fatality figure to 918 and 365 new cases were detected and 506 more patients have recovered from the viral bringing down the number of active cases to 3,964.

The number of recovered cases registered on Tuesday is 50,336 in the State, which has registered 55,218 confirmed cases so far.

Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said the new COVID-19 deaths recorded on Tuesday were four from East Khasi Hills district and one from West Jaintia Hills district.

Out of the 365 new cases, the senior medical officer said 80 were detected in East Khasi Hills district, 71 in West Garo Hills district, 56 in Ri-Bhoi district, 53 in West Jaintia Hills district, 22 in South West Khasi Hills district, 21 in North Garo Hills district, 17 in South West Garo Hills district, 15 each in East Garo Hills district and South Garo Hills district,13 in East Jaintia Hills district and 12 in West Khasi Hills district.

With 1087 active COVID-19 cases and 668 deaths, the East Khasi Hills, which includes state capital Shillong, is the most affected district, followed by Ri-Bhoi with 790 active cases, West Garo Hills with 622, active cases and West Jaintia Hills with544 active cases, while the seven other districts have less than 300 active cases each.

On the other hand, 31, 229 health care workers were administered with the first dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 and 20,327 received the second dose, 96, 958 front-line workers were inoculated with the first jab and 27, 842 took the second shot, while 5,94, 799 persons from among the general public received the first dose and 52,259 citizens were fully vaccinated with the second dose in the state as on date, a bulletin issued by the National Health Mission, Meghalaya reflected.
