India's heaviest rocket blasts off with GSAT-19, PM Modi congratulates

Sriharikota, June 5 (IBNS): Creating history, ISRO on Monday successfully launched its latest communication satellite GSAT-19 with its heaviest rocket - the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV-Mk III) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre here.

GSLV-Mk III is capable launching 4 ton class of satellites to Geosynchronous Transfer orbit (GTO).

It is a three-stage vehicle with two solid motor strap-ons (S200), a liquid propellant core stage (L110) and a cryogenic stage (C25), read the ISRO website.

GSLV-Mk III-D1 is the first developmental flight, carrying 3136 kg GSAT-19 satellite to a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).

The vehicle is configured with a 5 m ogive payload fairing and slanted strap-on nose cone to provide aerodynamic robustness.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated scientists over the successful launch of the rocket.

"Congratulations to the dedicated scientists of ISRO for the successful launch of GSLV – MKIII D1/GSAT-19 mission," Modi tweeted.

He said: "The GSLV – MKIII D1/GSAT-19 mission takes India closer to the next generation launch vehicle and satellite capability. The nation is proud!"
