Kolkata/IBNS: An inherited blood disorder thalassemia is marked by decreased haemoglobin production and other conditions.

According to medical experts severity of the disease and its treatment depends on the type of thalassemia the patient is suffering from.

However, a large number of patients require regular blood transfusion and other procedures, which make treatment of thalassemia a costly affair.

While thalassemia cannot be prevented, most medical professionals suggest that genetic screening test and counselling can help in determining if someone is a carrier.

To spread awareness about thalassemia, the Rotary Club of Calcutta Metro City in association with Vivekananda Mission Seva Pratisthan has launched a Thalassaemia Awareness tableau, which will travel across Kolkata.

According to a release, legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar is one of the supporters of Rotary Club's campaign to sensitise people about the need to test blood before marriage to prevent newborn thalassemics.

Santoor Maestro Tarun Bhattacharya is also features is also part of the campaign.

Speaking on behalf of Rotary, Subhojit Roy said  that in the coming days, Rotary may continue the effort to spread awareness among the suburban and rural population too.
