Magnitude 7.2 quake jolts Japan; Tsunami warning issued

Tokyo/UNI: A strong earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck off northeastern Japan on Saturday at around 1810 hrs.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

According to Kyodo news agency, the quake occurred at about 60 kilometers below the surface off the coast of Miyagi.

No abnormalities were found at nuclear plants in eastern and northeastern parts of the country.

The government issued evacuation orders to some 8,850 residents in coastal areas of Miyagi.
