Narayana Superspeciality Hospital launches Brain Tumor Clinic

Kolkata, Dec 8 (IBNS): Narayana Superspeciality Hospital launches a comprehensive Brain Tumor Clinic, where clinical tests and examinations to treatment and post operative care would be all available at one place. The clinic will be headed by team of experienced neurosurgeons, neurologists and radiation oncologists such as Dr Nilay Biswas, Dr Dilip Dutta, Dr Suman Mallik, Dr Jyotirup and others.

Diagnostic tests such as imaging (CT scan/ MRI scan), though various neurophysiological studies including EMG (electromyography), NCV (nerve conduction velocity) & EEG (electro encephalogram) will be available in the dedicated clinic.

Biopsies to confirm the nature of the tumor with specialized equipment and technology such as stereotaxy will also be available here. 

Dr Jyotirup Goswami, says, “Brain tumors are a varied group of tumors, both benign and malignant, which affect various different demographics & require early diagnosis & expert multidisciplinary management. Recent statistics show that a new brain tumor is diagnosed in as many as 500 persons worldwide in a day, or 20 persons every hour; brain tumors are the commonest solid tumors as well as the leading cause of cancer death in children, while they are respectively the 2nd and 5th leading cause of mortality in young men and women between the age of 20 to 40”. 

Dr Nilay Biswas, said that “The greatest advantage of the dedicated Brain Tumor Clinic is that a patient can get the benefit of expert opinion of Neurologists, Surgeon and Radiation oncologist in one sitting. The planning and execution of treatment for all kinds of brain tumors can be better implemented thanks to the Multi-Disciplinary team approach in the Clinic.”

Speaking about the launch of a dedicated clinic under the department of Neurosciences at NSH, R Venkatesh, Zonal Director, Narayana Health, said that, “Fortunately, with the advancement of medical science and technology, survival and quality of life are steadily improving across all tumor types and age-groups. We are launching the clinic so that the procedure of detection and treatment become easy for patients.”

To mark the launch of Brain Tumor Clinic, Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Howrah organised a medical education program on Neuro Oncology, in academic collaboration with the West Bengal chapter of the Indian Society of Neuro Oncology (ISNO).

The program was attended by neurosurgeons and oncologists from across the city, while the faculty included outstanding doctors from across the state and country, including Dr Manas Panigrahi (Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad), Prof Tejpal Gupta (Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai) and Prof Sandip Chatterjee (Park Clinic, Kolkata). The discussions included pediatric gliomas and brainstem gliomas, sellar and suprasellar tumors and pediatric germ cell tumors. The seminar was attended by over 80 specialist doctors.
