New Zealand reports one new case of COVID-19
Wellington/Xinhua: New Zealand reported one new case of COVID-19 on Friday, with the number of active cases in the country reaching 21, all in managed isolation facilities, according to the Ministry of Health.
The new case involves a man in his 40s who travelled to New Zealand from Africa.
He was tested negative on around day three of his stay in a managed isolation facility. He then tested positive on around day 12 and was being transferred to a quarantine facility in Auckland.
The case reinforced why testing people twice is necessary during their time in managed isolation, said a ministry statement.
"A second test around day 12 is needed because the infection may take longer to develop in some people. It's an important check used to find out if a person is safe to leave managed isolation," it said.
It has been 84 days since the last case of COVID-19 acquired locally from an unknown source, according to the ministry.
The ministry also reported that another two people had recovered from the virus, bringing the country's active case count to 21.
The country's total number of confirmed cases is 1,206, which is the number reported to the World Health Organization (WHO), it said, adding no one is currently in hospital receiving care for COVID-19.
