Rhino census to begin in Assam from next month

Guwahati, Jan 3 (IBNS): The Assam forest department is all set to conduct the rhino census across the state from next month.

Assam forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma on Tuesday said the rhino census will be conducted in all national parks, wildlife sanctuaries across the state from next month.

The last census was conducted in Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in 2015.

Over 2400 one horned rhinoceros, including 205 calf below one year and 1651 adult, were found during the last census in KNP.

On the other hand, the Assam forest minister worried about continued rhino killing incidents in the world heritage site.

Brahma said the state forest department failed to stop the rhino poaching incidents.

"While poachers are equipped with sophisticated weapons, forest guards are still using old types weapons to combat against poachers," the Assam forest minister said.

"But we are doing our best and forest guards gave all efforts to protect wild animals," Brahma said.

The minister further said that the state forest department and Assam police launched joint operation against poachers across the state.
