Scientists discover new planet orbiting star Proxima Centauri

New Delhi, Aug 25 (IBNS): Scientists have discovered an earth-sized planet orbiting a star closest to Earth's solar system, according to media reports on Thursday.

The New Scientist reported on Wednesday, "Earlier this month, rumours swirled that astronomers had discovered an Earth-like planet orbiting the closest star to our own, the aptly named Proxima Centauri...the planet's real."

The planet named Proxima b was discovered by a team of astronomers led by Guillem Anglada-Escudé of Queen Mary University of London; the effort was part of a project called Pale Red Dot.

Whether the temperatures on Proxima b are favourable for life to exist is going to depend on the presence of an atmosphere, reported the BBC.
