Thailand's new COVID-19 infections jump to 18

No deaths were reported, and the total number of infections stood at 2,987, while 2,740 people have recovered, 193 remained in hospitals. The total number of deaths stood at 54.

"The 18 newly infects were all female, with the other a 10 year old boy," said Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administrations (CCSA).

"Currently, 60 illegal immigrants at Songkhla's Sadao detention center have tested positive for COVID-19 since April 25, including the 18 new cases," Taweesin said, adding that health officials were conducting Active Case Testing (ACT) campaigns.

"We must conduct ACTs because already 3,277 people have returned from Malaysia, Indonesia and from other provinces, as well as those involved in religious activities from April 18 to April 24, twenty people have tested positive," said Taweesin.

"From the 20 people who have tested positive, we have chased after their contacts and found 6 more infected," Taweesin added.

The spokesman said that more than 220,000 people have been tested, mostly as part of the ACT campaigns.

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha earlier warned that should infections re-spike again after easing some restriction measures, he will recall all grants and put everyone back home again.
