New Delhi/IBNS: The Indian government on Friday confirmed that there are 81 people suffering from coronavirus in the country at present.

The government said out of the infected people  64 are Indian citizens, 16 Italians and 1 Canadian national.

The government said there is no epidemic of the novel coronavirus in the country at present.

“Till now, there are 81 confirmed cases in India, out of which 64 are Indians, 16 Italians and 1 Canadian national," Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Health Ministry said while addressing a press conference.

Meanwhile,  Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped up on Friday to propose to all South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations to chalk out a "strong strategy" to combat the deadly virus.

India recorded its first death from the virus on Thursday. The deceased was a 76-year old man from Karnataka.

Three people from Kerala have, however, recovered.
