Lome/Xinhua/UNI: Togo, which has registered 25 COVID-19 cases, reported its first case of death caused by the contagious disease on Friday night.

The patient returned from Belgium on March 17 and had respiratory symptoms, said a statement published on the government's official website.

Togo has taken a series of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus since its first case was confirmed on March 6.

The country has closed its land borders as well as the educational establishments, and locked down four cities with cases recorded, including the capital Lome.
