london/IBNS: The United Kingdom recorded its highest daily COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic on Wednesday amid the massive spread of the Omicron variant.

A senior British health chief reportedly said there could be a "staggering" rise in cases over the next few days.

The country reported 78,610 COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, about 10,000 more than the previous high that was reported in January.

With the Omicron variant surging across Britain, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned of a "tidal wave" of infections.

More than 10,000 cases of Omicron have alone been recorded, with at least 10 of them hospitalised.

One person has died after contracting the variant, which is set to become the dominant strain in London.
