Bhupen Hazarika national award conferred to Arunachal born Assamese writer

Guwahati, June 15 (IBNS): Sahitya Akademi Award winning eminent writer Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi has been nominated for the prestigious Sarhad’s 5th Bhupen Hazarika National Award-2017.

Maharashtra’s Pune based organization Sarhad on Thursday announced the prestigious award in the name of Assamese music maestro Bhupen Hazarika  to be conferred upon Arunachal Pradesh born Assamese writer.

Sarhad’s founder president Sanjay Nahar said that, Sarhad has been honouring a person from north east India who has rendered an outstanding work at the national and international level with its most prestigious Bhupen Hazarika award every year since 2012 and it is aimed at creating a strong bond between Maharashtra with north east.

The award consists of Rs 51,000, a memento and a certificate.

The organization conferred the award to like several national and international personalities including filmmaker Jahnu Barua, professor Ratan Thiyam, senior journalist Samudra Gupta Kashyap, singer-musician Lou Majaw.

This years’ award is being conferred to Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi at a ceremonial function to be held in Srinagar in the months September next.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal congratulated Thongchi on being nominated for the prestigious award.

Sonowal congratulated him over phone for the award and wished him all success in his future endeavours.
          
Hailing Sarhad for choosing Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi of Arunachal Pradesh for the award, Sonowal said that giving the award to Dorjee is an honour conferred on a person who has written about a dozen novels and numerous short stories and plays all in Assamese, a language over which he has a wonderful command.

Sonowal also thanked Sarhad and expressed his gratitude for instituting the award after the doyen of Assam and honour the persons having extra-ordinary contributions to the society.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also congratulated the retired IPS officer award winning writer.
