Corporate India needs more women participants says chamber of commerce meet in Kolkata
Kolkata, Sep 18 (IBNS): Women constitute around thirty per cent of corporate India and while the number of women directors in Indian companies is increasing it is still not large enough, were some of the key findings that were thrown up during a meeting at the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata recently.
The interactive session found a number of women entrepreneurs in discussion with US Consul General Kolkata Patti Hoffman.
Indian women face a variety of problems, including rape and honour killing. Although women's empowerment may be seen in urban areas, rural areas still lag far behind. One of the key problems in rural areas is lack of education for the girl-child.
Consul General Patti Hoffman highlighted how in the US for every two men who receive a bachelor degree, there are three women achieving the same.
One of the key areas where women are doing very well in the US is the teaching industry, she said. Women are also assuming higher management roles.
Hoffman reflected on her interaction with the women artisans of Kumartuli (a neighbourhood in north Kolkata where clay idols are made) and said she was inspired by their life stories.
Vikash Agarwal, Vice President ICC & President, Rupa & Company Ltd pointed out that women empowerment in the corporate world has a direct impact on the economic growth and development of any country.
Today participation of women in corporate India stands around thirty per cent, he said.
Nayantara Palchoudhuri, Chairperson, ICC Expert Committee on Women Empowerment , said that the percentage of women directors appointed in India companies is increasing but has a long way to go.
