Dalai Lama wins first Grammy at 90! What is ‘Meditations’ all about?
Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama won his first Grammy Award at the age of 90 on Sunday (local time) for his spoken-word album Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, media reports said.
The Dalai Lama was honoured at the 68th Grammy Awards in the Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording category, surpassing high-profile nominees, including former host Trevor Noah.
Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness is a contemplative and spiritually grounded work that brings together the Dalai Lama’s personal reflections and philosophical insights.
Rooted in Buddhist thought, the book explores universal themes such as inner peace, compassion, mindfulness, suffering, happiness, ethics, and the nature of the mind, making it accessible even to readers with no background in Buddhism.
Rather than functioning as a strict religious text, Meditations offers practical wisdom for everyday life, encouraging readers to cultivate kindness, emotional balance, and self-awareness in an increasingly stressful world.
Reacting to the honour, the Dalai Lama said the award represents a “recognition of our shared universal responsibility.”
“I receive this recognition with gratitude and humility. I don’t see it as something personal, but as a recognition of our shared universal responsibility,” he said in a statement.
“I truly believe that peace, compassion, care for our environment, and an understanding of the oneness of humanity are essential for the collective well-being of all eight billion human beings. I’m grateful that this Grammy recognition can help spread these messages more widely.”
