Kolkata: Bengali writer Sujan Dasgupta, who created the popular detective character Eken Babu, was found dead at his South Kolkata flat on Wednesday.

He was 78.

According to the Kolkata Police, Dasgupta's domestic help reached his house at around 10 am and knocked on the door. She raised an alarm when there was no response despite repeated knocking on the door and called the apartment's security guard. Both of them were unable to open the door, reports India Today.

Sujan Dasgupta's brother-in-law later reportedly arrived at the scene and informed the police.

When they managed to open the door, they found Sujan Dasgupta's body in front of the washroom in his bedroom, reports India Today.

The writer was taken to Baghajatin state general hospital where he was declared dead.

According to the police, Sujan Dasgupta was staying alone as his wife is in Shantinekatan on a tour and their daughter is in the US, the Indian news channel reported.

Dasgupta's 'Eken Babu' detective stories have earned appreciation from fans.

Movies, OTT web series and radio dramas were made based on the stories of Eken Babu.

Mahendra Soni, co-founder and director of SVF, tweeted: " Shocked and heartbroken at the untimely demise of sujandasgupta. May his soul rest in peace."

Anirban Chakrabarti, who is known for playing the detective Eken Babu on the big screen and web series, mourned the demise of the writer and said in a statement as quoted by Hindustan Times: "I honestly don’t know what to say about this, I’m at a loss of words. Sujan Dasgupta is someone I owe a lot to. I am Eken Babu to a lot of people first and Anirban Chakrabarti second, and to think that the man behind that very character is no more just breaks my heart.”
