Kolkata celebrates drum festival
Percussionist Bickram Ghosh and Siddha Community Foundations organized the Calcutta Drum Festival 2014 at ICCR here for the past two days where national and internationally known percussionists enchanted audience by their performances.
The two-day festival ended on Saturday.
The city grooved to the beats of percussionists like Gaurab Chatterjee aka Gabu , Sambit Chatterjee, Tanmoy Bose, Rimpa Siva, Sunayana Ghosh and popular bands like Latinos, The Beatboxers, The Flying Drummers of Manipur, Bollywood Drummers, Lilliput Drummers, Bagha Bynes, Jhankar Beats and Southern Invasion during the two-day festival.
The last day of the festival witnessed a duet performance by the father-son duo of Shankar Ghosh and Bickram Ghosh.
“It is after a long time that I have performed with my father on stage,” said Bickram Ghosh.
When asked about the drumming fever in Kolkata, he said, “A drum is an instrument of celebration. I think Kolkata needed a reason to celebrate through drumming because it activity brings people together. The rhythm creates synergy. This initiative was taken to showcase not only the drumming of Kolkata but also what it is acquired from the west. People like Nandan Bagchi had introduced western drumming in the 70’s. I think this festival would have an impact on the drumming culture of Kolkata.”
“We are trying to build a community of rhythm through this festival. I hope we will succeed,” said Ghosh.
