Mandolin maestro U Srinivas passes away
He was admitted to Apollo Hospital here some days back due to liver problem.
Apollo hospital, where the maestro was admitted, later released a press statement saying, “Srinivas passed away due to liver-related problems 9.30 a.m."
Popularly known as ‘Mandolin’ Srinivas the world over, Uppalapu was born Feb 28, 1969, in Palakolu, Andhra Pradesh.
As a mandolin player of Carnatic music discipline was a child prodigy.
As a six-year-old boy, Srinivas would play his father Satyanarayana's mandolin.
His brother U. Rajesh is also a noted mandolin player.
Srinivas gave his first public performance in 1978 at the age of 9 when he played at the Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival in Gudivada, Andhra Pradesh.
Three years later he performed at the Madras Music Season for the Indian Fine Arts Society.
His talent went beyond the boundaries of the country and he enchanted his followers all over the world.
In 1983, Srinivas performed at the JazzFest Berlin and later toured Canada, Australia and many other countries.
Since then, he has performed in several music festivals, both nationally and internationally.
In 1988, he was awarded Padma Shri. Later in 2010, he was honoured with Sangeet Natak Academy Award.
He he played in the Carnatic tradition and collaborated with Western musicians like John McLaughlin, Michael Brook, John McLaughlin, Trey Gunn, Michael Nyman and Nigel Kennedy.
Srinivas also performed with Hindustani classical musicians like Hariprasad Chaurasia and Zakir Hussain.
Famous music composer AR Rahman expressed shock in the legend’s untimely demise.
He said, “Emotionally shaken to hear of Carnatic shining star Mandolin Srinivasji's demise... May God bless him with happiness in the next world...”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief and sent condolences to the family members of the world renowned musician.
In his twitter account PM recalled the Mandolin Maestro`s dedication and long-standing contribution towards music and added that he will always be remembered.
