Tech firm OpenAI on Tuesday announced it is shutting down AI video generation app, Sora, without stating any reason behind taking such an action.

On its official X handle,Sora said: "We’re saying goodbye to the Sora app. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing."

"We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work. – The Sora Team," the company announced.

With Sora shutting down, the company will also end its content partnership with entertainment giant Disney

Meanwhile, OpenAI told the BBC on Wednesday that it has discontinued Sora so that it can focus on other developments, such as robotics "that will help people solve real-world, physical tasks."

Sora was officially launched in 2024.

However, app gained momentum and expanded in 2025 and gained impressive attention.

According to reports, the video generator, however, received criticism for violent and racist videos, as well as the use of copyrighted characters, deepfakes and misinformation.

Speaking on the deal, a spokesperson from the Walt Disney Company told The Guardian in a written statement that the studio would now be ending its partnership with OpenAI.

“As the nascent AI field advances rapidly, we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere,” the spokesperson said.

“We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are while responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators.”
