Kolkata and its adjoining areas were hit by a over 100 kmph wind and rain after Cyclone Amphan made landfall  in West Bengal towards Sunderbans. Several areas of West Bengal and Odisha witnessed heavy winds and rainfall as extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan made its landfall on Wednesday. Amphan wreaks havoc in Kolkata

Heavy rains and high velocity winds uprooted trees and electric poles, bringing to standstill traffic in several parts of Kolkata as Amphan crossed West Bengal. 

Super Cyclone Amphan claims three lives in West Bengal as per initial reports

 At least three people died as West Bengal continues to witness heavy rains and high storms on Wednesday evening owing to the landfall of the super Cyclone Amphan along the state's Sagar Island. Cyclone Amphan crossed West Bengal-Bangladesh coast between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) across Sunderbans near lat 21.65N & long 88.3E between 1530 & 1730 hrs IST of 20th May with wind speed of 155-165 gusting to 185 mph, the Indian Met Department stated.

A woman died after a tree fell on her at Minakhan area. At Howrah, a teenage girl died after being a tin shed hit her.

AMPHAN is crossing West Bengal coast between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sunderbans. Landfall process commenced at 2:30 PM. It will continue and take 2-3 hours to complete.

Cyclone may cause heavy damages in Bengal

Met officials have warned that the storm might cause heavy damages in East Medinipur, south and north 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hoogly, Kolkata districts of West Bengal.

Similarly, the storm can wreak havoc in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur& Mayurbhanj regions of Odisha.

Speaking on the post-landfall scenario, IMD said, "After the landfall the system is very likely to continue to move north-northeastwards, across Gangetic West Bengal & Bangladesh and weaken gradually. It is likely to maintain the intensity of Cyclonic Storm till the morning of 21st May and thereafter it will weaken into a Deep Depression over Bangladesh."

Meanwhile, authorities have carried out large scale evacuation in West Bengal to take people to safe shelters.

Amphan first super cyclone: IMD chief

"After the 1999 Odisha cyclone, Amphan is the most intense and the first super cyclone," IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

"We are dealing with a multi-hazard scenario. Devastating winds are likely to cause extensive damage," the IMD chief maintained.

 

Cyclone to cross Bengal and Odisha in between afternoon and evening

As per its latest bulletin, India weather officials said the cyclone will cross West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sundarbans in between afternoon and evening.

It might cross the region with a maximum sustained wind speed of 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph, met officials said.            

It is currently located 240 kms south of Digha.

"SuCS ‘AMPHAN’over BoB near latitude 18.7°N and longitude 87.2°E, about 180km nearly south of Paradip (Odisha).To cross West Bengal – Bangladesh coasts between Digha (WB) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sundarbans during Afternoon to Evening hours of 20th May," Indian Met Department tweeted.
