Cyclone Fani hits Odisha, over a million people evacuated to safety

The land fall impact of extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani has started this morning. 

The cyclone Fani is moving north northeastwards and cross Odisha coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali close to Puri with maximum sustained wind speed of 170-180 kmph gusting to 200 kmph. Heavy rainfall with wind speed reaching over 115 kmph started at sveral places in the coastal Odisha since early this morning with the MET department issuing red warning in as many as 17 districts in the state. Nearly 11 lakh people have been evacuated to safety.

Cyclone Fani hits Bengal, Heavy rainfall in Kolkata

Cyclone Fani entered West Bengal on Saturday. Parts of Kolkata has recieved moderate to heavuy rainfall since Friday. The cyclone is slowing moving towards Bangladesh. Kolkata Airport is expected to open at 8 am.Train service has been hit in Bengal after trees fell on tracks in some parts of the state. Several people were shifted to shelters in East and West Midnapore.

Puri: 160 injured, no deaths reported

In Puri, extensive damage to kuchha houses, old buildings and temporary shops, says government spokesperson.

No confirmed report of deaths, but 160 reportedly injured. Power and telecom is completely down. NDRF and state forces are clearing roads.

Cyclone Fani: AIIMS Delhi cancels exam centre in Bhubaneswar for test on May 5

"AIIMS PG exam is scheduled on 5th May. Due to cyclone Fani,  AIIMS Delhi is cancelling the exam centre in Bhubaneswar. Another exam will be conducted for students affected by this cancellation as soon as normalcy returns : H & FW Secretary Preeti Sudan," Sitansu Kar, Principal Spokesperson, Government of India & Principal Director General of Press Information Bureau, tweeted.
