11 trekkers dead in Uttarakhand's Lamkhaga Pass, massive Air Force rescue ops underway

New Delhi/IBNS: At least 11 bodies have been recovered from Uttarakhand's Lamkhaga Pass at an altitude of 17,000 feet where 17 trekkers, including tourists, porters, and guides, lost their way on Oct 18, media reports said.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has launched a massive operation in the area, which is one of the most treacherous passes connecting the Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh with Harsil in Uttarakhand.

The IAF responded to an SOS call made by authorities on Oct 20 and deployed two Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) choppers to reach Harsil - a tourist hill station in the state.

They began the search and rescue operation on Oct 20 itself with three personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) onboard the ALH craft.

The teams could locate the two accident sites only the next day.

The rescue operations have led the teams to recover two survivors and 11 bodies over a span of two days.

A search to locate and rescue the remaining missing individuals will be undertaken by the ALH crew on Saturday.

The rescue teams have handed over the bodies to the local police.

Meanwhile, the survivors were administered first aid at Harsil before they were sent to the district hospital in Uttarkashi.
