Mumbai: Nine people sustained injuries as they tried to board a train to Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur at Bandra Terminus in Mumbai amid a heavy rush of passengers before Diwali, media reports said.

The Indian Railways said the stampede occurred as passengers thronged platform number 1 of the station to board train number 22921 from Bandra to Gorakhpur, according to an NDTV report.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said two people have suffered critical injuries, while seven are in a stable condition.

The Gorakhpur Express, scheduled to depart at 5:10 am after rescheduling, arrived late at the platform, causing a huge rush around 3 am.

Passengers crowded the platform, trying to board the train’s general compartment, which led to a stampede.

The train had 22 unreserved coaches and over 1,000 passengers arrived on the platform. Some people attempted to board even while it was still moving, resulting in injuries to two people.

More than 50 police personnel were stationed on Platform 1 to control the crowd.

Visuals from the scene showed blood on the platform floor and Railway Police and other passengers helping injured individuals onto stretchers.

In one video, a railway cop carried an injured passenger on his shoulder, while another video showed two men lying on the ground with blood stains on their clothes.

Several people rushed in with stretchers to provide help.

In one of the visuals, a group of five was seen carrying an injured person using a large cloth as a makeshift stretcher. Another passenger was spotted sitting on a bench, shirt torn, and visibly in pain.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued an update confirming that the situation is now under control, and the injured have been transported to Bhabha Hospital.

Among the injured, one passenger sustained a spinal fracture, while others suffered leg fractures; two injured passengers have since been discharged, The report added.
