About 700 Maoists surrendered after demonetisation: Modi

New Delhi, Feb 8 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday backed his decision of note ban and promoted use of digital media while pointing that 700 Maoists surrendered after demonetisation announcement on Nov 8.

"About 700 Maoists surrendered after demonetisation and this number is increasing. Shouldn't this make us happy," Modi said in the Rajya Sabha.

He said corruption has adversely impacted the aspirations of the poor and the middle class.

Modi said: "The fight against corruption and black money is not a political fight. It is not to single out any particular party."

The Prime Minister said India is witnessing a 'horizontal divide' where people are supporting the government on the issue of currency ban.

"There is a horizontal divide- on one side are the people of India & Government and on the other side are a group of political leaders," Modi said.

He said :"Today India is working to correct the wrongs that entered our society."

He said instituions like RBI should be kept above politics.

"Attacks on the party I belong to, our government, on me are understandable but why was the RBI dragged into this. It was not required. Let us keep institutions above politics," Modi said.

Modi made the remarks while giving reply to the Motion of Thanks on President's address in the Rajya Sabha in a short while.
