Ahead of final draft of NRC publication, Modi government sanctions Rs 46 crore to construct separate detention centre

Guwahati, July 21 (IBNS): Ahead of the publication of final draft of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC), PM Narendra Modi-led government has sanctioned Rs 46 crore to the Assam government for construction of an independent foreigners’ detention centre. 

The centre will be constructed in lower Assam’s Goalpara district and would be the country’s first ever full-fledged foreigners’ detention centre.

The Assam government has already allotted 20 bighas of land at Dakurbhita area in Goalpara district for the detention centre.

Currently, there are six detention centres in Assam and all the detention centres are within the district jails with separate cells.

A top official of Assam government said the state government had sent a proposal to the Union government to construct an independent detention centre and finally the Union government has sanctioned Rs 46 crore for it.

The top government official further said that, the new detention centre will be a house with capacity of maximum 3000 inmates.

It assumes significance given that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is being updated in the state to detect the illegal immigrants. The NRC “complete draft” is due for publication on July 30.

According to the reports, out of around 90,000 declared illegal foreigners’, around 1500 are lodged in six detention centres.

The final draft of NRC will be published on July 30.

The first draft of NRC was published on Dec 31 midnight by including names of 1.90 crore out of 3.29 crore applicants.
