Amid plans to reopen economy India witnesses over 8000 COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours

New Delhi/IBNS: India on Sunday witnessed the biggest ever single-day spike as the number of coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours was 8,380, taking the total tally to 1,82,143, the Union Health Ministry stated.

The number of deaths crossed the 5,000-mark with 193 new fatalities on Saturday, the Ministry said.

With record spikes in three consecutive days, India is now ranked 9th globally in terms of the total number of cases of the pandemic.

The steep rise comes amid India's attempt to unlock the country in a phased manner.

In a bid to set the economy of the country rolling, the central government on Saturday limited the lockdown to only containment zones (where maximum positive cases are reported) till Jun 30.

Schools, colleges, educational/training/coaching institutions, as the Home Ministry said, will open in July after consultations with 36 states and union territories.

However, international passenger flights, metro rail, cinema halls, gymnasiums, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars and auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places will be closed for now.

In the Unlock 1.0, night curfew, a new guideline which was issued by the Home Ministry during the announcement of the lockdown 4.0, will now remain active from 9 pm to 7 am.
