Srinagar/UNI: Fresh lockdown has been imposed for eight days in the central Kashmir district of Ganderbal following a spike in the Covid-19 cases, a senior police officer said on Saturday.

There were 38 positive cases reported on Friday while the number of such cases was 25 on August 27. The district has 580 positive cases at present while 19 persons have died due to coronavirus till Friday.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ganderbal Khalil Poswal said that keeping in view the upsurge of Covid cases, the District Magistrate (DM) has imposed lockdown with effect from August 29 to September 5. He said the lockdown will be maintained with more firmness.

The SSP warned that non compliance shall attract action. He appealed to people to wear masks and save themselves.

Meanwhile, shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads. However, some private vehicles were plying.

Security forces and police personnel remained deployed to strictly implement the restrictions.
