Anti-encroachment drive begins in Delhi's Shaheen Bagh area; Cong, AAP protest

New Delhi/IBNS: A drive to demolish the alleged encroached areas in Delhi's Shaheen Bagh, which was the site of massive stir by Muslim women against the new controversial citizenship law, began with a showdown between the police and local people Monday.

The locals were sitting on the road in a bid to prevent or stop the drive in the national capital, where the civic body is run by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

A scuffle too broke out between the locals and police over the bulldozing of the alleged encroachment area.

Besides BJP's principal opposition party Congress, leaders of Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who were relatively silent on an earlier demolition drive in the Jahangirpuri area, joined the protests against the latest drive.

Reacting to the drive, Delhi AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan told Times Now, "I got the encroachment removed myself earlier, there is absolutely no encroachment here any longer."

In a counter statement, BJP's Adesh Gupta told the channel, "Everyone is watching how AAP, Congress are protecting encroachers."
