Assam joins Uttarakhand, Gujarat in push for Uniform Civil Code

| @indiablooms | May 25, 2026, at 11:45 am

Guwahati/IBNS: The Assam government on Monday tabled the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the state assembly, continuing the push to replace religion-based personal laws with a common legal framework, media reports said.

Assam may become third state to implement UCC

Assam is set to become the third Indian state to implement the Uniform Civil Code once the bill is passed into law.

Uttarakhand became the first state to pass the UCC law in February 2024, followed by Gujarat in March.

All three states are governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

More BJP-ruled states considering UCC

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh has already formed a committee to draft a Uniform Civil Code.

The BJP has also promised to introduce UCC in West Bengal, where the party recently came to power for the first time earlier this month.

What is Uniform Civil Code?

The Uniform Civil Code refers to a single set of personal laws that would apply to all citizens of India, irrespective of religion.

What does it cover?

It governs civil matters such as:

  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Inheritance
  • Adoption
  • Succession
