Baby selling: Day after malign charge by church, Jharkhand police release video of purported confession by MoC nun

In this short clip, the nun, Konsalia, says three babies had been had been sold but the fourth infant was given away for adoption for free.

The nun and Anima Indwar, another employee of  Nirmal Hrodau. run by Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, were arrested on July four for allegedly selling infants for adoption.

The arrests were made on the basis of a complaint filed by Child Welfare Committee's Ranchi unit chief Rupa Verma.

Konsalia’s purported confession came days after the Roman Catholic Church claimed that the police were attempting to malign its image.

“There is a deliberate attempt being made to thwart and undo all good things done by us [missionaries and churches] over decades in serving mankind,” Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, the general secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, told reporters on Thursday.

Mascarenhas said the church condemned the “whole incident” and was always open to any form of inquiry. But it was wrong to question the entire Missionaries of Charity and other missionary institutions.

The top church official also asserted that the nun is innocent and she had told her lawyers that the confession claimed by the police, was extracted under pressure.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also lent her support and accused the ruling BJP government of making "malicious attempts to malign" the charity and Mother Teresa's name. The Missionaries of Charity is headquartered in Kolkata.
