Bengal boat disaster : So far 18 bodies recovered

Burdwan, May 16 (IBNS) Altogether 18 bodies, including that of five women, were recovered from the Bhagirathi river by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel till Monday morning after a boat capsized on Saturday.

Reports said the search is still on as several other people are still missing and more bodies could be recovered.

An overloaded boat carrying approximately 100 passengers, capsized minutes after it set sail from Kalna in Burdwan district and was heading for Shantipur in Nadia.

There is no definite statistics available with the district administration as to how many people are still missing.

Locals  protested over the incident as they alleged that rescue operations started late.

The demonstrators reportedly pelted stone on the police.

They also set several boats on fire.

The police brought the situation under control by reportedly  resorting to mild lathicharge and using tear gas shells.
