Bengal polls: Mob attacks central forces, 3 CAPF personnel injured in Birbhum

Kolkata/IBNS: Sporadic violence marred the voting process during the West Bengal Assembly elections on Thursday, with a mob attacking central forces near a polling station in Birbhum district.

At least three personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), a police officer, and the driver of a police vehicle were injured in the attack.

The district, considered a stronghold of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), has often witnessed incidents of political violence.

Additional forces were rushed to the spot, and officials said the situation is now under control.

Crude Bomb Attack in Murshidabad’s Nowda

In another incident, several people were injured after crude bombs were hurled near a polling station in Murshidabad’s Nowda.

Tension gripped the area as eyewitnesses reported a sudden blast that disrupted an otherwise steady voting process.

The injured were taken to hospital, though the exact number of those affected was not immediately known.

BJP Candidate Allegedly Attacked in South Dinajpur

In South Dinajpur’s Kumarganj, BJP candidate Suvendu Sarkar was allegedly attacked by TMC workers, even as polling remained largely peaceful across most constituencies.

Phase 1 Covers 152 Constituencies

A total of 152 out of 294 constituencies across 16 districts voted in the first phase on Thursday, as the prolonged and intense political contest in the state moves towards its culmination.

Key Candidates in the Fray

Among the prominent candidates in this phase are Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, contesting from Nandigram, and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who is in the fray from Baharampur.
