Bengal: Voting in Asansol and Ballygunge assembly constituencies underway

Kolkata/UNI: By-election to West Bengal's Asansol Parliament seat in Bardhaman district and Ballygunge assembly seat in the city is underway on Tuesday peacefully so far and an estimated 8 percent voters have cast their franchise in the first two hours, official sources said.

The by-polls were necessitated as former Union Minister Babul Supriyo resigned as the MP of Asansol after switching over to the TMC from the BJP, while veteran minister Subrata Mukherjee, who represented Ballygunge, died in Nov 2021.

Polling began at 7 am amid tight security arrangements with some 133 companies of central armed forces deployed to man the polling centres in the two segments.

The ruling Trinamool Congress has fielded actor turned politician Shatrughan Sinha in Asansol, where the BJP nominated Asansol Dakshin MLA Agnimitra Paul and Left Front candidate Partha Mukherjee of CPI(M) was seeking his electoral fate for the first time from Asansol.

Babul Supriyo is contesting from Ballygunge where he is facing challenges from BJP's Keya Ghosh and CPI(M)'s Saira Shah Halim.

The Congress is also in the fray in both the seats.
