Kolkata/IBNS: Noted Bengali litterateur and academician Nabaneeta Dev Sen, who was a Padma Shri and winner of Sahitya Akademi, passed away on Thursday evening at her south Kolkata residence, various sources confirmed. She was 81. She was suffering from protracted illness.

A literary giant of Bengal who was the first wife of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, she was born on January 13, 1938.  She is survived by her two daughters- Nandana Dev Sen (actress) and Antara Dev Sen (a journalist).

Soon after the news spread her numerous admirers gathered outside her south Kolkata residence. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her grief among others. Sources said the end came after 7 pm in the evening.

Nabaneeta Dev Sen, who studied English and Comparative Literature in Presidency College, Jadavpur University and Harvard University and was known for her erudition and writings that included poems, satires, novels, travelogues and even fables, was the daughter of the poet-couple Narendra Dev and Radharani Devi. She grew up in Bengal and graduated with a master's degree in 1958.

In 1959, she married Amartya Sen but they parted ways in 1976.

Nabaneeta Dev Sen lived in Kolkata, in her parental house Bhalo-Basa, where she was born. She breathed her last here.

Her family members said they would provide access to media tomorrow.

Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerji, who has been a close family friend of the Sens, had called on the litterateur on Oct 23 to enquire about her health.
